Footjax Orthotic Styles

All of our orthotics use the same principle. That is to say that your orthotic is custom shaped to your foot first and foremost. From there, the intended activity and footwear is of utmost importance. A custom orthotic must fit your footwear properly. We use a variety of materials depending on your condition, footwear and activity.

Below are some basic orthotic qualities:

  • Versatility: If an orthotic is designed for specific footwear, you may or may not be able to transfer it to other footwear.

  • Volume: how much room does the orthotic take up in your footwear. This mainly involves cushioning material (more cushion = thicker orthotics), but also influences design features such as shell width, and shell material.

  • Durability: Of course you want your orthotics to last for ever, but an optimal functioning orthotic may have various levels of durability. Two main elements must be considered with durability. Shell durability, and top cover durability.

  • Top Cover: Each orthotic style has a classic top covering material that traditionally works best for that style, but nothing is set in stone. We will make sure the top cover on your orthotic works best for you. Materials include various foam materials, leather, vinyl, and cork.

Note: Top cover thickness is measured when they are new. Most top covers will pack out
under high pressure zones and therefore thin out with use.

Running Orthotics

  • Versatility: Fair

  • Volume: high

  • Durability: medium

  • Top Cover: 4mm full length foam.Overview: best in running shoes, hiking shoe/boots and some casual shoes with removable sock liners. The amount of cushion used depends on your injury. Traditionally more versatile for men than women. The shell is actually useful for life but the arch integrity of the shell will deteriorate to 60% of its original integrity within 2-4 years.

Versatile Orthotics

  • Versatility: good

  • Volume: very low

  • Durability: medium

  • Top Cover: vinyl, ¾ lengthOverview: Versatility is the point! These are used for dress shoes or extremely tight shoes. Even cowboy boots.

Soccer Cleat Orthotics

  • Versatility: poor

  • Volume: low

  • Durability: medium

  • Top Cover: full length 3mm foamOverview: Soccer is the highest force activity an orthotic has to withstand, yet low volume cleats require thin insoles. Versatility of soccer orthotics is poor due the narrow profile of the shell. The shell is actually useful for life but the arch integrity of the shell will deteriorate to 60% of its original integrity within 2-4 years. Top covers need to be re-lined more often due to packing-out.

Ski Boot & Mountaineering Boot Orthotics

  • Versatility: poor

  • Volume: low

  • Durability: High

  • Top Cover: Full length, 3mm foam with a cork forefootOverview: The orthotic shell must contour exactly to the boots shell. They go inside the liner, replacing the stock sock liner. Full length top covers add cushion and warmth. Ski boot orthotics are not easily transferred to other footwear

**We can modify boot liners and shells to further improve comfort and performance

Court shoe Orthotics:

  • Versatility: good

  • Volume: medium

  • Durability: good

  • Top Cover: 3-4mm full length foamOverview: Orthotics for court sports are designed with lateral motion in mind. They are more forgiving in the arch to allow better lateral stop-starts. Easily transferable, but less optimal than the standard for straight running or walking

Skate Orthotics

  • Versatility: very poor

  • Volume: very low

  • Durability: High

  • Top Cover: full length 1.5mm foam with a cork forefootOverview: The orthotic shell must contour exactly to the skates boot. Skate orthotics are very thin preventing the foot from being pushed “up” in the boot. The shell of a skate orthotic will last the life of the skate, but is so specific to that skate it rarely can be transferred to other footwear including other skates.

Gentle / Diabetic Orthotic

  • Versatility: poor

  • Volume: high

  • Durability: low

  • Top Cover: full cushion, full lengthOverview: The main goal is to offload high pressure zones under the foot. Used when your skin must be protected due to neuropathy, and circulatory impairment. Must be used in sensible shoes.
